Ven: Øresund Finest

Gently placed in the middle of the Øresund strait, where Swedes' and Danes' views face each other. Ven is a true, bucolic, islet gem. To place it in an itinerary context: it is a perfect daily escape from Copenhagen on a sunny summer day or a flashy detour while roaming through the Skåne coastline.

The best way to get around the island is by bike; it won't be hard to notice a fleet of yellow two wheelers parked on the top of the hill, just out of the dock of Bäckviken, that you can conveniently rent for the day, at a cost of 10-15 EUR. On the boat you will receive a map, to plan your favorite route through its 7.5 km2. The island has lots to offer: if you wanna follow the suggestions there are two routes, both appropriate for amateur bikers.

Among the green meadows and the barley fields Ven's surprising small reality will truly inspire you, evoking kind of blue Aegean vibes combined with Nordic coziness. Being a slightly hilly island we can't promise that the gears of your two-wheelers will be completely unnecessary. But even if you're coming from a flat Danish context the cliffy littoral will be easy to manage: the reward are the astonishing and sudden postcard moments.

The white Façade of St. Ibb’s church , with its medieval style, oversees the small historic harbor of Kyrkbacken. Founded on the 13th century it's an attractive spot for the bridal couples looking for nuptials outdoor experience. Below this bucolic "Belvedere" you can choose among a set of neat small fish diners for an unforgettable seaside lunch break. It's utterly unnecessary to remark the freshness of the food, it will be ultimately impossible to forget the smoked salmon.

This surprisingly pristine water will tempt you with its impeccable scale of transparency: we're confident that even the pickiest Mediterranean habitués will be up for the swimming opportunity. Regarding the temperature, no insurance policy will grant you warmness: it's possible, but definitely up to mother nature's mood.

The majority of Ven's coastline consists of steep grassy slopes, named backafall, which can range a difference of flora and elevation; from high cliffs diving to the sea to sandy little shores, Ven's natural borders are part of its enchanting DNA.

The volume of traffic through the Øresund strait makes it one of the busiest commercial routes in the world: for this reason the five lighthouses were strategically built along the island, with the crucial responsibility to guide boats safely. With modern navigation systems, of course, the duty of the beacons declined, but without any doubt they still represent an iconic landmark of the island.

Our itinerary would not be Swedish enough without a coffee break, and as the supply of cozy cafés in the island is quite rich, we decide to indulge ourselves a pit stop at Tuna Krog, picturesque and lovely corner.

Tycho Brahe, a prominent forerunner of astronomy and modern science, established here his observatory in the 16th century, which was called Uranienborg. The museum is situated in a former-church and offers a tribute to his techniques and development for studying the stars and planets. In case your thirst for knowledge isn't fulfilled after the visit, an iced cold beer in the terrace of the adjacent bar would certainly help.

As this article is being conceived we can spot snow flakes from the window: a good reason to dig deeper into further ocean options in the island. That's' why our mind goes back to Norreborg's marina with its sailing boats docked on a lovely blue water. Right next to the harbor you'll find probably the beast beach in the island, with its wooden little pier available, in case you need a soft approach to the water.

The island has plenty to offer in terms of accommodation, for those who don't want this idyllic adventure to be too short. From a hostel to campings, Ven is happy to welcome all the tourist needs, delivering amazing times, which will be hard to forget.
